Tip Of The Day: Value at Mall
In-form David Simcock could have a double-figure odds winner at Meydan today, reckons our man Will Hayler.
Jamie Spencer: On board Dragon Mall.
I thought the British action looked tricky today.
Englishwoman has the potential to go in again at Southwell from a nice-looking draw in stall two and I'm sure six furlongs suits her better than five. The money floating around for Idle Talker in the amateurs' handicap at the same track caught my eye, while, at Chelmsford, Bunbury is a horse who still looks like he can win, despite some fairly harsh treatment from the handicapper.
I'm leaving that for a dabble on the feature race at the Dubai Carnival, however, as I can definitely take on favourite Flash Fire in the Group Two Al Fahidi Fort at 1650(GMT).
You might cock a snook at the Meydan action, but I quite enjoy it, despite the obvious challenge of trying to match up formlines from different continents when trying to unravel the races.
Flash Fire's finest moment on these shores came when he won the Victoria Cup at Ascot last year, but he also produced a number of less-illustrious efforts and he's never been the sort of horse to be relied upon. He was undeniably impressive when scoring at this meeting a fortnight ago on his first start since being gelded and it's possible that operation has simply turned him around. Possible, but I wouldn't bank on it, not least because this smaller-field Group Two affair could be far more tactical than the big-field handicap which he took apart there with no guaranteed pace in the field.
Anaerobio won this race in 2014 and has finished twice in the last couple of years. He has four lengths to make up on Flash Fire on their latest running, but was never really seen with a chance there and I fancy a reversal of that form at the odds today.
However, at an even tastier price, I'm going to chance Dragon Mall for Jamie Spencer and David Simcock, whose all-weather team have been flying in Britain in recent weeks.
Dragon Mall had some decent form in Listed and Group races in Britain last year, while still looking as if he would benefit from being given further time to mature. Having been given three months off, I liked the way he shaped when given a warm-up at Chelmsford last time in the same race in which Marco Botti ran Fanciful Angel to finish fourth – and that gelding got off the plane to win a one-mile handicap here seven days ago.
