Tip Of The Day: Walk this ‘Way
Southwell is the scene for our racing tip, a horse who bids to improve upon his already-impressive 3-5 record at the track.
Bryan Smart trains today's Southwell selection
Meadway looks a sporting bet to improve his course record even further at that great specialists' track Southwell this afternoon.
Bryan Smart's runner took his form figures at the track to '11129' with an uncharacteristic blip on his latest start, after which the vet reported he had cut into himself. In any case, the race didn't go to plan almost from the start with Conor Beasley having the horse slightly more prominent than usual and allowing him to get hooked up with pacesetter Razin' Hell rather than conserving his energies for the end of the race.
Interestingly, Meadway's last three victories have all come on the back of shocking efforts and Paul Mulrennan, on board for two of the horse's three Southwell successes, returns to the saddle today.
In any case, this is an easier contest than the higher-grade event in which he ran last time and I can see him faring better against Razin' Hell this time (drawn two stalls away and again a likely leader) if he is ridden just a little more conservatively.
Dungannon was the other one I liked the look of, but the seller he won last time fell apart in his hands and I'm not at all convinced by his resolution. Meadway, on the other hand, is 6-from-33 and many of those defeats came in big-field turf sprints which simply don't really seem to suit. This sort of race, however, does, and he's got to be worth a bet at around the 8/1 mark.
