TOP-CLASS staying hurdler Thistlecrack could make his eagerly anticipated chase debut at Chepstow on Tuesday, with the eight-year-old ready to start out on a path connections hope leads to the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup in March.

Unsuitably quick ground forced trainer Colin Tizzard to scrap his original plan to launch the reigning World Hurdle champ over fences on the same course early this month and while an entry has been made for Tuesday's card, Tizzard will again be keeping a close eye on the weather.

"I have made an entry today for Chepstow," Tizzard said on Wednesday. "If the ground is right we are going to go. He schooled again today and he is ready to go. But who knows what the ground is going to be like? If that doesn't work out, he will have an entry at Wetherby."

The ground was reported to be good, good to soft in places at Chepstow on Wednesday, with the rest of the week expected to be mainly dry.

Thistlecrack won all five races last season, including three in Grade 1 company, and Tizzard has said he is set to be aimed at the Gold Cup rather than a novice event at Cheltenham this term if he takes to fences.
