Top Notch ‘quicker and slicker’

Top Notch made it two wins from three starts over fences as he landed the Autumn Gala Novices' Chase at Plumpton.

Top Notch: Impressed with his jumping technique.

Nicky Henderson's charge was sent off the 2/5 favourite following an impressive victory on his second chase start at Warwick just under two weeks ago.

Daryl Jacob was positive from the off about Top Notch, with the five-year-old turning in an impressive round of jumping with only the four-year-old, Romain De Senam, mounting any sort of challenge.

However, Jacob asked for a bit extra at the turn for home and Top Notch, despite conceding the best part of a stone to his younger rival, easily pulled clear on the run to the second-last.

Two fine leaps sealed the victory, with Top Notch coming home six lengths clear of Romain De Senam, with Overtown Express making late headway for third.

Jacob told At The Races: "I was very happy with him. It wasn't ideal, as you didn't want to really be making the running, but I had no option.

"It's another learning curve and he'll be a lot more better for it. He's getting quicker and slicker."

In victory, Top Notch qualified for the £60,000 SIS bonus offered to any horse successful in selected novice chases at the track this season and at the Cheltenham Festival.

Sky Bet spokesman Michael Shinners commented: "Top Notch showed a really likeable attitude and was very slick over his fences as the pace quickened. He remains unchanged with Sky Bet at 16/1 for both the Racing Post Arkle and the JLT and it will be interesting to see if connections keep him at two miles or step him up in trip."
