Torrid time at Beverley

Ben Linfoot heads to Beverley for the racing tip of the day, with one of Mick Easterby's fancied.

Mick Easterby: Trains Torrid

TORRID – 4.10 Beverley

That's a bit of a misleading headline, as any racegoers at Beverley today should have a great time on the final race day of the season at the track.

The feature race is a belter for starters, with Double Up strongly fancied to win the Eddie And Violet Smith Conditions Stakes for Roger Varian.

This five-year-old sprinter is in the form of his life and a a strongly-run sprint over the stiff five at Beverley in this company looks the perfect opportunity for him to get his head back in front.

He shaped with plenty of promise in the Portland and he could win a group race yet. This looks a drop in class for him and he's got a nice low draw just off the pace.

It's not hard to envisage him winning given Varian's current form, but the stable's hot streak means he has been well found in the market and I'd rather wait another hour for a bet.

Mick Easterby's TORRID is another one dropping in class – this is his first go in Class 5 company – and he's looking a well-handicapped horse after dropping 10lb in the weights this season.

Despite the slide, I don't think his recent runs have been without promise. Particularly his third at Pontefract off 82, his eighth (of 18) at York off 80 and his sixth (of 16) off 78 at Carlisle.

Even his fourth at Wolverhampton last time wasn't too disappointing as he shaped quite well considering he was keen and was then denied a run a couple of furlongs from home.

Dropped another 2lb for that to a mark of 74, today's assignment is his easiest for a while and hopefully Ralphy Boy and Energia Flavio will set a strong enough gallop to help him settle.

If that's the case a bold run is anticipated and the general 7/1 on offer looks fair.
