Trophy option for Salouen

Salouen's excellent effort in finishing second in the Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Chantilly on Sunday came as no surprise to his trainer Sylvester Kirk.

Salouen could head for Doncaster

The Upper Lambourn handler has always rated the son of Canford Cliffs highly and had expected a big run. Salouen did not disappoint as he put in his best work at the finish but could not get to the winner National Defense.

Salouen had decent form in the book, winning in good style at Salisbury and taking second place behind Dewhurst fancy South Seas in the Solario Stakes at Sandown.

Kirk now has to decide whether to aim Salouen at the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster on October 22.

"It was an excellent run. He was back here this morning and he's really good," he said. "It was a funny race. They went fast, slowed it up and then sprinted home, but it was a fast time.

"I know I've got a nice horse but no one knew just how solid our form was. David Evans' horse (Sea Fox) was a close third in the Royal Lodge. We beat him at Salisbury and no one rated that.

"My horse's form has been solid once he's stepped up to a mile. I was hoping he'd run a big race because it didn't look the best Group One race ever.

"I got half wound up thinking I might nick one, but I'm delighted for him to go into Group One company and do what he did.

"The winner is a very good horse and it was a fast time."

Looking to the immediate future, he said: "He's in the Racing Post Trophy. We'll see how he is after that run. The owner is very keen to have a pop at it.

"It can be tough for a two-year-old going over there and running like he did. It was very promising, even though he was beaten four and a half lengths. He stayed on well and he's a hardy horse.

"There's next year. He's been a little bit weak. Everything has been a bonus with him. He should make a nice-three-year-old.

"He's got a good attitude and is a straightforward horse. I've never had any trouble with him."
