Report: USA, Saturday
Keeneland: Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (Grade 1) 1m1f, 3yo fillies
TRAINER Hugo Palmer was denied Grade 1 glory in the USA by just a head and a nose on Saturday as Hawksmoor was agonisingly run down in the final stages by Time And Motion (James Toner/John Velazquez) and Harmonize.
Winner of the German 1,000 Guineas, Hawksmoor travelled smoothly alongside champion filly Catch A Glimpse until the home turn when she went powerfully to the lead and charged determinedly for home.
Her move was covered by Time And Motion and the two fillies settled down for a head-to-head battle which Hawksmoor looked to be getting the better of for most of the home stretch.
But inch-by-inch Time And Motion edged nearer and nearer to the leader and yards from the line she was forced in front by Velazquez to take the verdict in a desperate photo finish.
The gallant Hawksmoor had to settle for third after a late flourish from Harmonize brought her through to steal second by a nose.
"I thought I had the horse in front, but my filly didn't want to pass her," Velazquez told DRF.com. "Then the other horse came to our outside and that's what made her go forward."
The result left Palmer with a mixture of emotions, and he wrote on Twitter: "Gutted and proud in equal measure. Hawksmoor finishes a brave third at Keeneland."
