Uttoxeter target for Pobbles Bay
Evan Williams has set his sights on a crack at the Midlands Grand National with useful novice Pobbles Bay.
Pobbles Bay: Could go for the Midlands National.
The seven-year-old scored on his chasing bow at Uttoxeter in November and followed up with victory at Chepstow over the festive period, beating the well-regarded Ibis Du Rheu in the process.
Williams pitched him into Listed company at Warwick at the weekend, but after finding American 15 lengths too good, the Llancarfan handler is planning a drop in class.
He said: "He came out of the race and the Midlands National will be his target now.
"American was just too good. We were found out in that company, so we will switch back to handicap level now."
Stablemate Firebird Flyer could also come under consideration for the Midlands National at Uttoxeter on March 18, which he won 12 months ago, but he may first be seen in action in the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock this weekend.
The 10-year-old could not build on his second place in the 2015 Welsh National as he finished only eighth behind Native River in the Chepstow showpiece on his latest start.
Williams added: "Firebird Flyer could go for the Midlands National, but I might run him from out of the handicap at Haydock this weekend.
"If he didn't go there, we could wait for the Grand National Trial at Haydock next month. Testing ground is certainly a big help for him."
