Waiting game pays off

Waiting Patiently had enough in hand to narrowly maintain his unbeaten record over fences at the expense of Politologue in the big novice chase at Haydock.

Brian Hughes and Waiting Patiently power home on the run-in to beat Politologue and take the Star Sports Novices' Chase at Haydock.

Favourite Politologue, himself also coming into the race with an unblemished record as a chaser, took up the running with over a circuit to go under Sam Twiston-Davies and produced a characteristically impressive round of jumping.

He saw off the attempted challenge of It'safreebee down the back straight, but all the while Brian Hughes was gradually bringing the 11/4 winner into contention and he eased into second place as the field turned for home.

Three out, Hughes seemed content to take a lead as Politologue galloped on strongly a couple of lengths ahead, but on the run to the final fence, the successful rider asked his mount to go and Waiting Patiently took up the advantage.

Politologue tried his hardest to rally but, giving 3lb to his rival, he couldn't find an answer and went down by a length and a quarter, the pair finishing well clear of their rivals.

"He's only a young horse, he's only six and his future is hopefully ahead of him," winning trainer Malcolm Jefferson told Racing UK.

"He's always looked like a chaser, he's always jumped well, and I think when you have a horse that jumps well like he does, you're almost better going over fences as soon as you can."

The winner earned a quote of 10/1 from Sky Bet for the JLT Chase at Cheltenham, but Jefferson was not surprisingly circumspect.

"He'll have an entry in that and the Arkle, because I don't think two miles would bother him, but he won't go anywhere unless it's soft ground," he said.

"He's a good horse, he's a very, very good horse. Every trainer hopes they will get a Grade One horse and I hope he could be one of them but I've been in this game a very long time and I know how hard it is."
