TRAINER Jason Ward was fined £1,200 at a BHA disciplinary hearing on Thursday for a "comment which referenced an offensive and inappropriate racial connotation" at Wolverhampton on November 1

Ward's comments, made during a live interview on At The Races following Monte Cinq's win, caused widespread reaction with the Middleham trainer issuing an apology on his website and to the Racing Post.

"It was just a slip of the tongue, I spoke without thinking," said the trainer. "It was not meant in a racist way, in any shape or form, and I can only apologise for my choice of words."

The disciplinary panel found that Ward was in breach of Rule (A)30, in that he acted in a manner which was prejudicial to the good reputation of horseracing, and fined him £1,200.

Rider banned for six months

Jockey Ryan Clark has been handed a six-month ban by a BHA disciplinary panel after testing positive for a metabolite of cocaine at Lingfield on September 20

Clark, who has had his licence suspended since September 30, will not be eligible to ride before March 29 next year.

When interviewed by BHA investigating officers last month, Clark stated that he recalled that on the night of September 17 he had gone out with friends and had become intoxicated but did not remember taking cocaine.

However, "following the positive result he made enquiries with his friends, who had confirmed that he had taken cocaine that evening".

Solicitor Rory Mac Neice, acting on Clark's behalf, submitted that his client accepted full responsibility for his mistake and was determined to get his career back on track.

Clark has ridden three winners this season, two coming aboard unbeaten filly Mrs Danvers.
