Wide draws could hinder Cesarewitch fancies

Sir Mark Prescott: is concerned by St Michel's draw

IN A huge field of largely well-established performers one might expect there to be a blot on the handicap, and in the Betfred Cesarewitch there is indeed such a blot. The problem for punters is there could be not one blot but three. Or maybe more.

One of the potential handicap snips hails from a yard that has produced many such horses in the past.

The Sir Mark Prescott-trained St Michel is a long way ahead of the handicapper, but so too is the Hughie Morrison-trained Sweet Selection, while it is also likely the constantly improving Starchitect will be starting for David Pipe off what might be called a workable mark.

St Michel runs off 97 but following his third in the Doncaster Cup is now rated 112.

Prescott is pleased with the three-year-old, but wary of both the draw and Sweet Selection. He said: "St Michel has been fine since his Doncaster Cup run, although he's a pretty fit horse so I haven't done much with him since. It's comforting he's 15lb well-in on official handicap figures, but I think Sweet Selection is just as well treated and I wish St Michel was drawn a bit lower – the records suggest it's pretty hard to win from out there [stall 32]."

Draw not so sweet

Sweet Selection will tackle the marathon with a BHA mark of 87 but after her fifth in the Doncaster Cup is up to 104.

Morrison also runs Fun Mac and Star Rider, but like Prescott, is concerned about the draw with Sweet Selection in stall 23.

He said: "Sweet Selection would be our best chance but I wouldn't rule out the other two. Sweet Selection is well-in but is she classy enough to overcome the very tough older stayers who have been through the mill? Unfortunately all of ours are drawn out in Cambridge."

The draws have not deterred punters, with St Michel the 6-1 favourite, while there has been suport for Sweet Selection, and she is now as short as 7-1. At bigger prices Golden Spear has been backed int0 18-1 (from 25).
