Will Kennedy needs Ascot winner

Will Kennedy is no desperate hurry to look for a ride at Ascot, the only domestic racecourse he has yet to secure a winner, after he closed in on the clean sweep when victorious on Desert Cry at Ayr on Monday.

Will Kennedy (l) only needs an Ascot winner to complete the set

Since having the first of more than 300 winners in the 2003-04 season, Kennedy has enjoyed success at every track on these shores except at the Berkshire venue.

While he would like to fill in the gap, he is happy being based in the north with Cheshire handler Donald McCain.

"It's a gimmicky little thing, but it would be nice to do it," said Kennedy.

"Hopefully I've plenty of years left in me so I'll ride something at Ascot with a chance, I hope.

"It's not something I'm pushing for. I'm riding for Donald (McCain) and he doesn't run a lot at Ascot.

"I might not do it this year. I haven't ridden at Ascot yet this season and I may end up not riding at Ascot this year.

"I'm riding mainly up north, but some day I'd like to do it. It would be nice to have ridden at every course in the country.

"For the last few years I've needed Newcastle, Ayr and Ascot.

"Last year I rode a winner at Newcastle for Brian Ellison and obviously on Monday I had a winner for Donald at Ayr, so now that just leaves Ascot."

Kennedy, who was champion conditional in 2006, is on course to have his best season numerically and is on the 39-winner mark, just eight short of his personal best achieved last season.

He has struck up a successful partnership with McCain and gave him the 1,000th winner of his training career when steering home Lough Derg Jewel at Kelso last week.

"I'm pinching myself," he said.

"I've had a fantastic start to 2017. I had a treble on New Year's Day and then had a winner on Monday.

"It's going really well. Donald's horses are in great form. Long may it continue."
