William H Bonney fires in finale

William H Bonney landed a few tidy bets when winning the Steel Plate And Sections Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham.

The six-year-old had looked unlikely at Kempton when colliding with Drumcliff and had attracted support in the morning prior to the latter's declaration as a non-runner.

Wayne Hutchinson gave the six-year-old a confident ride, creeping into contention as they came down the hill and moving to the front approaching the last.

There were still a number in with chances and it looked as though Man Of Plenty could come with a charging run down the outside but his effort rather petered out as Hutchinson asked the winner for more.

William H Bonney responded in the style of a horse who is ahead of the handicapper, finding plenty and running on well to complete a good day for trainer Alan King who also won the feature Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster with Ziga Boy.

"He tanked through the race and I was worried he was doing too much, but he does pull up in front," said King.

"We might go for the Betfair Hurdle now, that should put him spot on, I don't think he's had a hard race today.

"He was lame for a long time and the team worked hard to get him back."

The 5/1 winner finished a length clear of Man Of Plenty with Divine Spear in third and was slashed to 14/1 from 33s by Sky Bet for the Betfair Hurdle.
