Wincanton could go all hurdles
Next Thursday's meeting at Wincanton could be switched to an all-hurdle card due to the recent dry spell of weather.
The British Horseracing Authority has opted to programme two provisional hurdle races for the May 11 card to safeguard the fixture against abandonment, should no appreciable rain arrive over the weekend.
Wincanton's reservoir is currently running low so officials will now concentrate their watering efforts on the hurdles track in a bid to provide safe jumping ground and allow the meeting to go ahead.
The course is currently described as firm, good to firm in places and a decision on whether to abandon the planned chases and activate an all-hurdle card will be made by 2pm on Monday.
Clerk of the course, Barry Johnson said: "Our reservoir is running low so we have taken the decision to concentrate our efforts on watering the hurdle course only.
"There is the chance of rain over the weekend and we want to give the chases every chance so will make a decision as to an all-hurdle card on Monday."
