Wishes times it right at Wetherby
Lord Wishes came with a tremendous late run to claim the feature Bobby Renton Handicap Chase on the opening afternoon of Wetherby's new season.
Nick Scholfield rode the winner
Trained by James Ewart in Langholm, Dumfriesshire, the nine-year-old had been freshened up by a 77-day break.
Ridden by Nick Scholfield, was was taking his record on Lord Wishes to two wins from just two rides, victory looked unlikely all the way up the straight.
Degooch took over from The Grey Taylor at the fourth-last and had everything else in trouble two fences later.
He got in tight to the final fence, though, which allowed Pair Of Jacks, who had been briefly outpaced, a chance to pounce as Brian Hughes appeared to have timed it perfectly.
However, just as that one hit the front Scholfield began to get a real tune out of Lord Wishes and the 7/1 chance won going away by a length.
"Two-mile-three is a bare minimum for him these days," said Scholfield.
"There's just a bit of rising ground from the second-last to the line and that made all the difference.
"He's a very good jumper. He'd had a little break but he was very fit."
