LAST season's standout European first-season sire Zoffany put a first Group 1 winner on the board on Sunday when his son Ventura Storm landed the Premio Jockey Club at Milan in Italy.

Ventura Storm saw off the locally-trained Pounced colt Full Drago by a neck, with Andrew Balding's Mount Nelson mare Elbereth in third.

Trained by Richard Hannon for Middleham Park Racing, Ventura Storm has been a fine flagbearer for Zoffany, having also won the Group 3 Prix de Reux and two Listed contests and finishing second in the St Leger on his last start.

Zoffany is also the sire of European Group 2 winners Foundation, Illuminate, Knife Edge and Waterloo Bridge and Group 3 scorer Dolce Strega, while Architecture and Washington DC have registered Group 1 placings.

Zoffany, a son of Dansili who won the Phoenix Stakes at two and finished second to Frankel in the St James's Palace Stakes at three, had his fee at Coolmore increased to €45,000 for 2016.

This year he covered 208 mares, 36 of whom were black-type winners including Mauralakana, Shalanaya and Yesterday, who struck at the highest level. He was also sent the dams of Group 1 winers Dancing Rain, La Collina, Make Believe and The Wow Signal.

Ventura Storm was bred by Laurence Kennedy out of the unplaced Haafhd mare Sarawati, a half-sister to Listed winner and Ribblesdale Stakes second Sahool and to the dams of Group 2 Prix Robert Papin winner Gutaifan and dual Hardwicke Stakes winner Maraahel.

Other close relations are Group 2-winning sprinters Haatef and Magical Memory.

Haafhd has emerged as a useful broodmare sire, as another daughter bred this year's leading three-year-old sprinter Quiet Reflection.

Sarawati was bought as a broodmare prospect for 36,000gns by George Mullins at the 2010 Tattersalls December Breeding-Stock Sale.

The ten-year-old also has a yearling colt by Footstepsinthesand who was sold to Peter and Ross Doyle for €200,000 at last month's Goffs Orby Yearling Sale, and a colt foal by Rip Van Winkle. She was covered by No Nay Never this year.

Ventura Storm has been through a sale ring three times: as a foal at Goffs when bought by Tally-Ho Stud for €54,000; as a yearling in the same ring when bought by Grangebarry for €50,000; and as a two-year-old at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-up Sale when bought by Peter and Ross Doyle for 110,000gns.
