Zonderland set for Ascot’s QEII
Zonderland is likely to have his final start of the season in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Qipco British Champions Day at Ascot on October 15.
Zonderland (blue cap) has a lot of potential for next season
Although forced to settle for second in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood last Saturday, the son of Dutch Art had previously ran out an impressive winner of the Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury.
Chris Richardson, racing manager for owners Cheveley Park Stud, said: "Frankie (Dettori) thought he had gone and won the race, but the other horse (Lightning Spear) came by without giving him a chance to battle.
"He ran a very good race. It was just a shame that the other horse came with a wet sail and collared him on the outside.
"We were very happy and, in fairness, Lightning Spear has looked like a good horse for some time.
"We didn't put him in the Joel Stakes at Newmarket – as you saw in the 2000 Guineas he didn't handle the track.
"The QEII is under consideration and if the ground is suitable we will head for that.
"If not, we will take a view, all being well, and look forward to next year.
"I suspect that would be his last run if he goes to Ascot as he has done more than enough this year, winning a Listed and Group Three race along with finishing second in a Group Two.
"Frankie seemed quite optimistic when he got off him Saturday that he had a lot of potential to offer next year."
